The Legacy of our Late Watchman

Like many young men of his generation, he learned early the value of hard work and perseverance, yet his shoes were always polished, and he never wore a tinted shirt. And just like he took care of his polished shoes and clothes, he took care of his family and faith until the end.

In a small village in Singida Region in 1960, Mzee (Mr. in Swahili) Andrew grew up surrounded by the simplicity of rural life, shaped by traditional values and a community-oriented spirit. As a young man, he moved to coastal Tanga, where he started a family. Married and blessed with children, he worked as a security guard. His job was demanding, yet he fulfilled his duties with integrity and diligence. Later, he was employed as a watchman for the Scripture Mission Organization in Arusha. This new role meant leaving his family behind in Tanga to live and work in inland Arusha, close to Mount Kilimanjaro.
The separation was not easy, but Mzee Andrew remained focused. He was determined to provide for his family while pursuing his dreams of pastoral education. His ability to balance work, education, and family responsibilities became a hallmark of his life.
Those who knew Mzee Andrew remember him as a calm and wise man, always ready to offer advice or lend a helping hand. His neighbors speak of his unwavering kindness and commitment to his community. But it wasn’t just his character that stood out; it was his pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Known for his knack for grammar, Mzee Andrew even reviewed scripts for The Legacy of Adam.
Even as he grew older, while working full-time, he also studied pastoral education, showing it’s never too late to follow your dreams. His faith and love for his children kept him going. He made sure to educate all his children, provide them with food, shelter, and clothes, chase his own education dreams, and serve God by spreading the gospel in his community.
Andrew was faithful in prayer groups and helped teenagers through church communities. Sadly, in 2023, he passed away after battling anemia and recurring fevers. His loss was deeply felt, but his legacy lives on through his children, some of whom serve in the Tanzanian army, carrying forward his values of discipline and service.

Mzee Andrew’s story is a reminder that true success is not measured by wealth or fame but by the impact we have on others and the determination to keep moving forward despite hardships. His life teaches us:

Andrew was an invisible silent warrior, who diligently did his work without any fame, an important man to his family. Does the world know Mzee Andrew, probably not, but is the world better because of him? Definitely, yes, and this is his legacy.
